Global home furnishings are in demand -- and sometimes expensive. For the do-it-yourselfer, however, creating the unique is as simple as recycling a wonderfully carved old door.

    Figure A

Designer David Stoffers turns an old door into a stylish coffee table.

    Materials:

    Old carved wooden door
    4 turned legs
    Straight 1" x 4" boards for apron
    Glass top (optional)
Molding to contain glass with 1/2" groove (optional)
    Saw
    Hammer
    Nails
    Screws
    Sander
    Varnish
    Wood glue
    Clamps
    Decorative carved molding

    1. Clean and sand door if necessary.

    2. Clean and prepare the legs. (Be sure all are the same length.)

    3. Cut wood to size and, if working with a friend, attach aprons to legs (figure A). If working alone, however, aprons can be attached to the door for easier assembly. Use wood glue and clamps to secure pieces.

    4. Attach door to base.

    5. Finish and varnish table as desired. For a more finished look, cut and miter the corners of molding. Use the molding to provide decorative elements and cover the table's edges.

    6. Before adding fourth piece of molding, glass may be added to the tabletop to create a smooth, even surface. Then add final piece of molding to complete the project.
