Crafter Mary O'Neil turns a throwaway wooden crate into an elegant footstool. Materials: Old wooden crate 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood measured to fit top and inside of crate Batting (optional) Firm foam padding Spackling compound or wood putty Putty knife Sandpaper Fabric adhesive Fabric of choice Finials or screw-on legs Iron Staples Upholstery staple gun Wood glue Large wood clamps Decorative upholstery tacks (optional) Hammer - Spackle or putty over nail holes and burned-in writing or logos on crate's surface. Allow to dry, then sand smooth.
- Measure and cut fabric into strips slightly larger than box sides. Iron edges of fabric under before adhering to sides of crate.
- Use fabric adhesive to apply fabric to sides.
- Fasten legs or finials by screwing into the wooden edges (figure A).
- To create top, layer plywood, foam and batting (figure B).
- Cut fabric a few inches larger than layered top. Wrap around and staple to secure edges of fabric beneath the padded top.
- Use wood glue to secure smaller wooden board to upholstered top. Next, use clamps to press pieces together and allow to dry for 24 hours.
- Nail upholstery tacks around edges (if desired) and add top to crate.
