One the bookcase panels are cut and prepped, they're ready to be assembled.

    Materials:

    Table saw
    Metal ruler
    Pencil
    Hammer
    Punch
Drill with 1/8" and 1/4" bits
    Woodworkers glue
    Clamps
    1 1/4" screws
Soft cloth (to remove excess glue)
    Small strip of wood

    1. A rabbet joint (figure A) is created on the back edge of each side panel that will later hold the back piece in place. Johnson removes an area 1/4" wide and 1/2" deep using a table saw. To make this cut, keep board perfectly straight during cutting. Then, adjust saw and flip the board on edge to make the second cut.

    2. Next, holes are created to support the adjustable shelf. Two rows of 1/4" holes will be drilled on the inner surfaces of the side panels. First, create a template by drilling 1/8" holes in a metal ruler 1" apart. Clamp the ruler into place over the inner surface of the wood panels.

    3. Then, use a hammer and punch to mark the position of each hole (figure B) onto the wood's surface.

    4. Apply masking tape to a drill bit to mark depth and drill 1/4" holes (figure C) as indicated by the punched "starter" holes.

    5. Position all outer pieces of the bookcase (be sure to use the supporting top, not the decorative top -- which will be added later) and begin assembly. Apply a bead of woodworkers glue to the adjoining edges of all four panels. Position corners into place and clamp to secure (figure D).

    6. Strengthen corners by attaching side panels to top and bottom by countersinking 3 holes through each joint. Use 1 1/4" screws to secure (figure E)

    7. Remove any excess glue.

    8. Finally, glue a bottom cleat to bottom of front edge of bookcase (figure F ). Clamp to bottom shelf to secure as it dries.
