Even though the panels are oak plywood, solid oak strips are added to the edges to disguise the layered wood and create the look of a solid oak piece.

A solid oak bookshelf can be costly, but DIY Woodworking host Bruce Johnson offers a less expensive solution: a bookcase created of oak plywood with solid oak trim. Using oak plywood for the top, bottom and sides also saves time -- eliminating the gluing of panels into solid pieces.

Johnson offers a few tips that ensure the best results when working with plywood panels:

    • When working with hardwood plywood, use a carbide blade with 60-100 teeth per blade (figure A) for a clean cut with little splintering.

    • Always saw with the best side facing up.

    • Make sure blade is parallel to table saw fence.

This is an intermediate project that can be completed for less than $100.

    Materials:

Pre-measured and cut oak plywood (for sides and bottom)
Two sheets of oak plywood (one larger than the other) for supporting top and decorative top
    Table saw with carbide blade
    Oak strips
    Woodworkers glue
    Small brush
    Fine-toothed back saw
    Pencil
    Pipe clamps

    1. Use carbide blade to saw the plywood panels, then apply oak strips (Johnson uses 1/8" thick x 3/4" wide) to the edges of the shelf and bottom and side panels. Apply woodworkers glue to the edge of panel. Use brush to spread glue over surface to thoroughly coat the piece and prevent running.

    2. Press strip into place (figure B and use masking tape -- not clamps -- to apply pressure as it dries (figure C).

    3. Then, use fine-toothed back saw (figure D) -- with about 18 teeth per inch -- to cleanly cut away excess portions of each strip at the end of panel.

    4. Next, cut and apply a 3/4" x 3/4" strip of oak to edges of decorative top panel. Mark a 45-degree angle (figure E) and use table saw to cut mitered edge.

    5. Re-adjust table saw and cut opposite end of strip (figure F).

    6. Apply woodworkers glue and position onto edges.

    7. Position pipe clamps in center and on each end of the top panel as glue dries.
