    Figure A

Faced with a wall-sized, floor-to-ceiling set of cabinets, Nancy Golden decided to create an area in which to display various utensils as well as objets d'art. The first step was to remove the upper doors, leaving the bottom doors to provide storage for other, less decorative supplies.

She then painted the inside area of the cabinets a bright white and the outside a cheery yellow, which was picked up from the window treatment.

After the paint dried, the fun began. Among the accessories displayed:

    • Basket of bread (Golden suggests lacquering the bread and using it as a permanent display)
    • Jars of olives, snack mix, etc.
    • Majolica, casserole dishes
    • Place mats, napkins
    • Cookbooks
    • Corkboard (made from a painted picture frame with a cork insert, hung by a French-wire ribbon from a decorative knob attached to one of the shelves)
    • Wine rack.

The table that Golden chose for the area is made of iron with a glass top; she pairs it with black iron chairs. The glass and iron materials, which don't take away from the visual space, also add a touch of the outdoors.

A wool dhurrie rug under the table (figure A) adds a colorful touch, picking up the greens, golds and burgundy from the window treatment and introducing a few other hues that complement them.

One surprising -- and extremely functional -- addition to the room is a wall niche, created from an existing telephone nook. Golden painted the back wall with chalkboard paint and added a hinged shelf, which opens up to create a handy writing surface.

Colorful art prints, bottles of flavored vinegars and oil-preserved fruits, more cookbooks and an attractive spice rack provide still more warmth and charm to the room.

Golden points out a small countertop cabinet, painted a pristine white, that she situated on the side of the room opposite all the white tile. She explains that adding the white cabinet helps to balance the room, as well as providing still more display space. She also uses an iron rack to hold mugs and small topiaries on either side of the sink to further enliven the kitchen.
