Add shelves anywhere you wish by hanging them from lengths of jute rope.

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, makes a shelf unit out of boards and rope.

    Materials:

    Curtain rod and brackets
Boards for shelves (whatever size you prefer)
    Sandpaper
    Tack cloth
    Paint or stain
    Safety glasses
    Drill
    Jute cord
    Duct tape
    Ruler

    1. Cut the boards to the correct size, or have them cut when you buy them.

    2. Stain or paint the boards, as desired, and let dry.

    3. Wearing safety glasses, drill a hole in each corner of the boards. (Tip: Place another board under the one you're drilling to keep the hole from splintering.)

    4. Tape the end of a roll of jute cord to make it easier to thread through the hole. Thread it from the bottom through the first hole.

    5. Decide how far apart you want the shelves to be, measure that length on the jute and tie a knot at that point.

    6. Thread the second shelf onto the jute. Repeat to make as many shelves as you wish.

    7. Place the ruler on its end atop the final shelf, run the jute over it, thread the jute through the opposite hole and knot the jute on the bottom of the shelf.

    8. Repeat the preceding steps on the other end of the boards, and hang the shelves by running the rod through the two pieces of jute and mounting it on the wall brackets.
