These cute shelves started out as unfinished window boxes.

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, shows how to make a wall shelf out of an unfinished wooden window box. Materials: Wooden window box Paint (main color and a contrasting color) Painter's tape Spoon Brushes Craft foam Craft knife Wooden knob Acrylic craft paint Glue Keyhole brackets, screws, screwdriver, etc., for mounting - Paint the window box the color of your choice and let dry.
- Tape off the area you wish to accent. Use a spoon to burnish the edge of the tape so no paint will seep under it.
- Paint the area in a contrasting color and let dry. Remove the tape.
- To make a stamp for decorating the shelf, draw your design on a small piece of craft foam and cut it out with a craft knife. Glue the pieces to an inexpensive wooden knob.
- Use acrylic paint to stamp the design onto the surface and let dry.
- Attach keyhole brackets to the back of the box and hang on the wall. The box can be hung with the open side up, for a catch-all, or with the open side down, for a simple shelf.
