These cute shelves started out as unfinished window boxes.

Nancy Golden, host of DIY's Decorating and Design, shows how to make a wall shelf out of an unfinished wooden window box.

    Materials:

    Wooden window box
Paint (main color and a contrasting color)
    Painter's tape
    Spoon
    Brushes
    Craft foam
    Craft knife
    Wooden knob
    Acrylic craft paint
    Glue
Keyhole brackets, screws, screwdriver, etc., for mounting

    1. Paint the window box the color of your choice and let dry.

    2. Tape off the area you wish to accent. Use a spoon to burnish the edge of the tape so no paint will seep under it.

    3. Paint the area in a contrasting color and let dry. Remove the tape.

    4. To make a stamp for decorating the shelf, draw your design on a small piece of craft foam and cut it out with a craft knife. Glue the pieces to an inexpensive wooden knob.

    5. Use acrylic paint to stamp the design onto the surface and let dry.

    6. Attach keyhole brackets to the back of the box and hang on the wall. The box can be hung with the open side up, for a catch-all, or with the open side down, for a simple shelf.
