Home-improvement expert Chris DeJulio shows how to make a creative corner shelving unit with a pair of folding closet doors. Old or new shutters hinged together work well too. Molding is used for shelf supports for triangular shelves cut from plywood. Chris finished the front of each shelf with decorative rope and painted the entire unit green. Materials: Old or new shutters or folding closet doors Plywood Circular saw or jigsaw Molding Level Screwdriver Wood screws Hardware and tools Optional: decorative braid or rope Paint or stain Optional: hardware for attaching the unit to the wall - Set the pair of folding door panels in the corner. If you're using old shutters, add hinges first.
- Decide on the number of shelves to add to the unit. To determine the shelf size, measure the width of the side of the unit from the front to the back corner (the width of the shutter or door panel), and take the front measurement from corner to corner (figure A). Use those measurements to cut new triangular shelves from plywood (figure B).
- Cut two pieces of molding for each shelf to act as shelf supports. Cut each a bit shorter than the width of the door panel or shutter, and screw them in place (figure C), making sure they're level before attaching them.
- Slip the shelves in place (figure D) on the shelf supports. Trim the front edge of each shelf with decorative braid or rope, and paint or stain as desired. Chris glued a piece of rope to the front of each shelf and painted the entire unit green.
- The shelving unit may be left freestanding or screwed to the wall for security.
