A divider screen can help define separate spaces within a large room. Another technique is to create a visual break in a long wall with an architectural column. Paint the wall on one side of the column, and wallpaper the other, and make the column appear built-in by fitting its base into the baseboard. To make the column appear built-in, remove a section of the baseboard the width of the column (figure A). Apply construction adhesive to the back of the column with a caulking gun (figure B), and set the column in place on the wall, using a level to make sure it's plumb (figure C). Countersink finishing nails into the edges of the column to hold it in place while the glue dries. Use spackling compound to fill in the holes, then touch up with paint or stain.
