The simple styling of Shaker-style furnishings and accessories reflects the Shaker philosophy, which emphasized cleanliness, order and economy. The straight lines and clean, tapered legs of a Shaker table are a beautiful combination of function and elegance (figure A).

A comb-back chair in fine-grained cherry is distinctly simple -- all straight lines, with no ornamentation (figure B).

Everyday items -- round wooden boxes (figure C), woven baskets and peg racks -- were finely crafted as well and kept a home in order simply and economically. Today the finely crafted simplicity of Shaker style is considered elegant and desirable.
