Picture frames, hatboxes, old and new furniture -- all can easily be covered with wallpaper. Here's a decorating project that's fun and easy and costs next to nothing. Leaf-Covered Box Frame An inexpensive box frame is fitted with a picture-framing matte and covered with vinyl wallpaper (figure A), forming the base for the leaf-covered frame. Materials:
Wall-covering border in a leaf pattern Wall-covering primer Vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive Plastic box picture frame Matte for photos Scissors Painting tape - Remove the excess from the laser-cut leaf border with your fingers (figure B). (The laser- cut edge makes scissors unnecessary.)
- Plan the layout of the four pieces of wallpaper by placing them on the box frame (figure C). Use painting tape to mark each wall-covering strip and the frame so you know which strip goes where.
- Cut the corners to overlap so the wall-covering pattern looks seamless and leaves are cut out at corners (figure D).
- Use painter's tape to mask off the center of the frame. Apply wallpaper primer around the frame on all areas that will be covered with wallpaper (figure E).
- Brush vinyl-to-vinyl adhesive onto a wall-covering strip (figure F), and book it by folding it onto itself (figure G). Let the adhesive set up for about three minutes.
- Position the wallpaper on the frame so one corner is square and the other edge is cut out to overlap the next side. This is fabric-backed wall covering, which is tear-resistant and very forgiving. You can lift it and move it around to get the right position.
- Smooth the wallpaper into place with a clean, damp sponge, always working from the inside out. Remove any excess adhesive with the sponge.
- Apply the remaining strips in consecutive order.
