The tightly woven back -- with padding inserted -- is both comfortable and sturdy. As the tape is wrapped around the posts of the frame, it actually pulls the framework together.

Once the frame has been assembled and finished, it's time to weave the seat and back.

Complete plans and kit for the Shaker Rocking Chair in Bruce Johnson's demonstration can be purchased from the Shaker Workshops.

    Materials:

    Shaker Rocking-Chair Kit
    Scissors or utility knife

    1. Using fabric tape supplied in the kit, wrap one end over the top rung and secure to back post with tack. Push tack into place with finger (figure A), then hammer to secure.

    2. Roll tape under the bottom rung and back up and over the top (figure B). Keep tape even as it is alternately wrapped over and under the top and bottom rungs. At the end of each row, pull tape to tighten.

    3. When half of the chair's back has been wrapped, insert foam padding between the two layers of fabric tape (figure C). Continue wrapping the tape in the same manner until both top and bottom rungs are completely wrapped.

    4. Take the end of the fabric tape to the back of post and cut away excess.

    5. Cut off about 12' more of the tape. Tack tape's end and begin weaving the tape. Alternate over and under the vertical rows (figure D), wrapping around the posts at each end.

    6. When entire back has been woven, tack end to back of post and cut away excess fabric tape.
