Once the front is assembled, it's time to move on to assembling the frame and adding the rockers. Complete plans and kit for the Shaker Rocking Chair in Bruce Johnson's demonstration can be purchased from the Shaker Workshops. Materials: Shaker Rocking-Chair Kit Stretch cords 1/8" drill bit Drill Screwdriver - In this particular kit, the back frame of the chair is already assembled, so begin by using brush to apply glue to all holes on the back frame and the front posts assembly .
- Insert side rungs in all holes on one side (figure A) and insert arm into corresponding slot.
- Move to opposite side and insert arm into slot (figure B). Begin inserting rungs into holes, working from top (just beneath the arm) to bottom.
- Lift front post assembly into place and insert all rungs into holes on one side only (figure C). Insert front post into hole on arm and place chair upright.
- Use stretch cords to hold frame in place (figure D). Then insert remaining side rungs into place. Insert rung into arm.
- Allow frame to dry before adding rockers. Turn chair on its side and use hand to tap the rockers into the slot at the bottom of the front and back posts.
- Use 1/8" drill bit to drill pilot hole in center of the intersection of the rocker and front leg (figure E). Use screwdriver to drive the screw into the holes. Repeat for the back.
- Turn chair over and repeat steps 6 and 7 for the opposite side, both front and back.
- Finally, place chair upright and add finials to the top of posts that extend beyond the tops of the arms (figure F).
