Although their sect was originally an English religious movement, American Shakers found a home in New York and became renowned for the handmade craftsmanship of their products. Despite the fact that Shaker furniture has little adornment, most woodworkers agree that true Shaker creations are unparalleled in quality. DIY Woodworking host Bruce Johnson uses a kit to complete his Shaker creation -- a rocking chair. This project can be completed for less than $250 (most kits contain all materials -- even glue and stain) and is a great project for beginners. Before getting started, Johnson recommends the following: - Immediately checking all pieces in the kit against the enclosed materials list and instructions to insure that none of the pieces is missing.
- Using fine sandpaper to remove any marks or rough edges (a few sandpaper selections are usually enclosed with the kit; sanding can also be done as the pieces are assembled).
Complete plans and kit for the Shaker Rocking Chair in Bruce Johnson's demonstration can be purchased from the Shaker Workshops. Front Posts Materials: Shaker Rocking-Chair Kit Web clamps - Begin by dry-fitting the three front rungs into the two front legs.
- Use small brush to apply glue inside holes (figure A) on all pieces. Even though glue bonds the wood surfaces, it also causes the wood to swell, ensuring a snug fit.
- Insert rungs into all holes on one side of leg, then insert them into all the holes on the opposite leg (figure B).
- Use web clamps to encompass the frame and secure all the pieces as they dry ( figure C)
