Vicki Payne, host of DIY Crafts, demonstrates a simple way to transform any glass light fixture into a beautiful Tiffany-style lamp. Materials:
Etched-glass shade/dome as a base Mosaic glass glue Black mosaic glass grout, available from craft shops, home-improvement centers and glass retailers Mosaic grout sealer Assortment of colorful art glass Hardware assembly for hanging or displaying shade Stick & StayB. adhesive Mosaic glass cutter Glass-cutting equipment (e.g., mosaic glass cutter, wide-nose pliers) Safety glasses Small bowl for mixing grout Paintbrush for applying grout Terra-cotta flowerpot saucers to hold cut-glass pieces Optional: light box - Select a glass dome or shade to be decorated. Glass domes and shades are often available from retailers of stained glass (figure A).
- Create a design on paper, and make several copies of the design. Cut the shapes apart, and using Stick & Stay adhesive, arrange the pattern of pieces on the inside of the glass dome (figure B).
- Cut pieces of glass with a mosaic cutter or a glass cutter. Keep the pieces small (figure C).
- Apply mosaic glass glue to one small section at a time, and arrange the glass pieces. It may be easier to see the designs if you place the shade over a light box. Let dry for 24 hours (figure D).
- Mix mosaic glass grout according to package instructions. It will be thin. Never attempt to use tile grout.
- Use a small brush to apply grout to the shade. Hold the shade up to the light, and make sure to fill all the gaps between pieces. Let the grout set for 20 minutes (figure E).
- With a damp sponge, clean off excess grout from the shade. Let it set for 30 minutes and clean it again.
- After the grout has dried, apply mosaic sealer.
Note: - Since the dome is the base for constructing the lampshade, you'll need a new dome for each lamp you make.
