Carol Duvall, host of HGTV's The Carol Duvall Show, demonstrates how to cover a lampshade with gift-wrapping paper and add a gold-leaf background for architectural design appliques.

    Materials:

    Northland Dec-A-Lamp® lampshade
    Gift-wrap
    Pencil
    Scissors
Spray adhesive or PEELnSTICK® double-sided adhesive
    Stiff paintbrush
    Gold leaf and gold-leaf adhesive
    White glue
    Soft paintbrush
Black-and-white copies of architectural or seashell graphics
    Blair Spray Acrylic Coating®

    1. Remove the protective paper from the lampshade. This fits the lampshade perfectly and is designed as a pattern for cutting the covering paper or fabric for the lampshade. Place the paper pattern on the wrong side of the gift-wrap, and draw around it approximately 1/2" to 3/4" larger on all sides (figure A).

    2. Or make your own pattern by rolling the lampshade along the paper, tracing along the top and rolling the lampshade back to the beginning, tracing along the bottom (figure B).

    3. Cut along the traced lines on the gift-wrap.

    4. Select the desired type of adhesive. Apply it to either the shade or the paper.

    5. Cover the shade with the cutout gift-wrap, centering the shade between the top and bottom so the fold-back extensions are even (figure C).

    6. Cut slits from the edge of the paper toward the top of the lampshade along the fold-back extension so the paper will fold smoothly to the inside of the lampshade. Fold back the extension, and glue it to the inside of the lampshade with white glue, glue gel or Super Glue (figure D). Do the same at the bottom of the lampshade.

    7. Brush on the gold-leaf adhesive with a stiff brush. Let dry (figure E).

    8. Apply gold leaf to the dried adhesive with your fingers (figure F).

    9. Brush away excess gold leaf (figure G). Apply gold leaf in several areas around the lampshade.

    10. Make black-and-white copies of architectural columns, seashells or other decoupage designs. Check the library for books to use as sources for graphics.

    11. Cut out the designs, and glue them over the top of the gold leaf (figure H ).

    12. Spray the lampshade with Blair Spray Acrylic Coating.
