Home craft expert Kathi Cardinalli creates elegant silhouettes on a lampshade. Use her techniques to add a special touch to a lampshade you've had around the house for a long time. Materials:
Three different colors of lightweight to medium-weight handmade paper or rice paper Lampshade White glue - To cover the lampshade, make a pattern by finding the seam on the lampshade and rolling the shade along the paper all the way around, marking the top and bottom lines with a pencil, until you reach the seam again (figure A). Because the bottom of the shade is larger than the top, the resulting pattern will not be a cylinder but will have curved edges, with the bottom longer than the top.
- To attach the paper to the shade, use plain white glue that has been thinned with water to the consistency of cream. Starting at the seam of the shade and the edge of the paper, apply a coat of glue to the shade and glue the paper onto the shade. Glue only about 2" at a time, smoothing as you go (figure B).
- Trim the paper 1/4" larger than the shade on top and bottom. Apply glue to the inside of the rim of the shade, and glue the excess paper to the inside (figure C).
- Cut leaf shapes from a different colored handmade paper by tracing around leaves you've selected from your yard. Glue the leaf shapes to the outside of the shade in either a regular or a random design (figure D). Cutting the paper is better than trying to tear it.
