    Materials:

Rectangular glass vase (or vases) in desired size
    Papyrus and/or handmade paper
    Sealing wax and seal
    Raffia
    Votive candles
    Scissors
    Clear double-stick tape

    1. Wrap the glass vases with the paper; mark the paper3/4" to 1" longer than the circumference of the container and 1-1/2" to 2" less than the height of the vase. Cut the paper to these dimensions. For a more natural edge, fold the paper back and forth several times and tear along the folds.

    2. Wrap the paper around the vase like a sleeve (figure A). Use a bit of double-stick tape to secure the overlap and hold the paper in place. Wrap a couple of strands of the raffia around the vase and knot securely. Place the knot on the paper overlap (figure B).

    3. Place the parchment-wrapped vase on its side with knot and overlap facing up. Carefully heat the sealing wax. Puddle the heated sealing wax on the knot (figure C).

    4. When the puddle is large enough, stamp with decorative seal (figure D). Allow to cool.

    5. After the sealing wax has cooled, trim the raffia tails to the desired length, place a votive candle inside the container and light the candle.

Tip: Though square-sided vases mimic the lines of the classic luminaria, cylindrical or even triangular-shaped vases will work.

Products: Check out the art-supply store for interesting papers. They have a myriad of choices, ranging from handmade textures featuring fibers and natural bits to hand-blocked printed papers.
