  • Quirky Casual Living Room: The Walls
  • Painted stripes are the way to give the Fazio's yellow living room a fun wave and warm brown contrast.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-313

    Striped Walls
A quirky, casual living room is the goal and the Fresh Coat team begins by painting the walls, creating a textured striae look with a warm brown earthy colored paint. Adding extender to the paint makes the paint easy to manipulate because it's wet for a longer period of time.

They add more interest with a second stripe, using hand cut sponges to create a wavy pattern. A taupe-tan color goes on first, then they dip the sponges in a glaze, drag them along our stripe in a zig-zag pattern and presto - a wavy fun look. This technique will also reveal a hint of the original yellow wall.

    Figure C
    Materials:

    rosin paper
    tape
    box brushes
    screw drivers
    pencils
    measuring tape
    level
    1 gallon AC-9 (matte)
    varnish and artist brushes
    wide square brushes
    6" rollers and trays
    X-I-M Xtender
    large container
    stir stick

    1. Cover hardwood floor with rosin paper and tape down.
    2. Tape off baseboards and ceiling.
    3. Remove all switch and outlet plates.
    4. Measure out stripe pattern with pencils and levels. To find the center of the wall, measure the length and divide by two. Start pattern from the center point and work your way out to the corners
    5. Tape off stripes (figure A). Seal tape with varnish for smooth lines (figure B).
    6. Roll on AC-9 Nugget, then drag a brush through it while still wet for a more textured effect (figure C).

Note: if paint is drying too quickly for this technique, add X-I-M Latex X-tender to the paint. This clear medium keeps the paint wet longer allowing more time to manipulate the paint.

    To make the wavy pattern:

    Materials:

    tape
    varnish
    artist brushes
    1 Gal HC-83 (matte)
large square sponges (for dragging a wavy pattern)
    XIM Xtender
    container
    stir stick

    1. Tape off for painting narrow stripes, seal with varnish.
    2. Roll on HC-83 Grant Beige then drag a comb through it to reveal a hint of the original yellow wall color and add more pattern (figure D).

Note: If you’re painting two colors next to each other and want a clean line, tape the first section and paint. Then seal the tape with varnish when you tape the next section. This will clean up any fuzziness from the first line.
