With a few nice accesories painted, the Fresh Coat team turns their attention to giving the fireplace wall a limestone plaster finish. They fill in the mortar lines and cover the entire surface with limestone-tinted plaster to create a smooth, contemporary, architectural element (figure A).Next they trowel on acrylic flat wax for a nice satin sheen, instantly making the fireplace the focal point of the room.
Materials:painters tape crimped wire cup brush plastic trowels hawks mud pans medium putty knives AcrylPro ceramic tile large sponges large container with water Benjamin Moore 985 Tinted Primer Indian River small rollers small trays large container and spatula Marmarino acrylic flat wax Universal Tint
1. Tape edges of fireplace (figure B). 2. Using trowels, fill mortar lines with AcrylPro Ceramic Tile Adhesive, feathering out the edges to blend smoothly with the surface. 3. Before the surface dries, use damp sponges to smooth it further (figure C). Let dry.
4. Trowel on a thin coat of Marmarino plaster to cover the entire surface (figure D). 5. As the plaster begins to set, smooth and polish the surface (burnish) with the flat side of the trowel. Let dry (figure E). 6. Mix Cal-Tint II Universal Tinting colorants burnt umber into SAFS Acrylic Flat Wax and trowel a thin coat (figure F). Let dry. 7. Burnish with trowel again to soften the sheen for a finished look (figure G).
