  • Decidedly Chic Dining Room: Wall Decoration and Rug Painting
  • Depth is added to the wall color, and the existing rug gets a paint facelift.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-213

Steel wool brings a sophisticated sparkle to freshly painted walls as Shannon Kaye and roommates Ally and Layne continue their dining room makeover.

    Materials (wall):

    6" mini rollers
    small trays
    steel wool
    angle brushes
    clear glaze
    Golden Acrylics Iridescent Bronze paint

    Materials (sisal rug):

    thick rollers
    large trays
    1-1/2" angle brush
    straight brushes
Benjamin Moore floor and patio paint (#473, Weekend Getaway)
    Benjamin Moore paint (#2112-10, Mink)
Benjamin Moore paint (#1665, Mozart Blue)

    1. The freshly painted trim is taped off.

    2. Clear glaze is mixed with Iridescent Bronze acrylic paint and rolled over the walls in sections.

    3. While the paint is wet, a rough grade of steel wool is pulled vertically through the glaze, creating striations in the glaze. Shannon Kaye uses two hands to pull the steel wool through the paint, leaving a small strip of glaze on one side: it will overlap and blend with the next section of glaze (figure A) (figure B).

    4. The sisal rug is taken outside for painting and placed over a tarp. Sisal is a porous, absorbent material; it will absorb quite a bit of Weekend Getaway floor and patio paint and require ample drying time. Two coats of paint are rolled on the rug.

Note: Expect possible variations in color saturation over the surface of the rug (figure C).

    5. When the paint is dry, Shannon Kaye and crew paint random freehand paisley designs over the rug, using Mink and Mozart Blue (figure D).
