Roommates Allister Bland and Layne Roberson are learning the delicate balance of sharing space; their current dilemma is how to turn a bland, slightly feminine dining room into a space that is masculine enough for Ally yet stylish enough for Layne.
Decorative painter and host Shannon Kaye has a plan to make the room a more contemporary and fun place to entertain. The walls will be painted dark blue with a bronze glaze (glaze will keep the color from looking too dark in the space). The old sisal rug is showing its age: paint and pattern will give it a fresh look. An old dresser gets new life with an antiqued paint finish. And finally, the table will receive a bright finish that complements Ally's favorite orange chair. The different paint treatments will provide contrasting colors, patterns and textures in the room (figure A) (figure B) (figure C) (figure D).
Paint budget: $200.Materials (walls): rosin paper tape box brushes blue paint brushes large rollers large trays Benjamin Moore paint (BM #1665, Mozart Blue)
1. The hardwood floor is covered with rosin paper (a heavy paper, less slippery than tarps), which will protect the floor from accidental paint spills.2. The ceiling edges and trim are dusted and taped to prevent paint bleed (figure E). 3. Using brushes and Mozart Blue paint, Shannon and crew cut in around the ceiling and trim, creating a clean paint line. Deep blue paint is a great dining room color because it creates a dramatic backdrop and evokes the feeling of nighttime (figure F).
4. Paint is rolled over the walls and allowed to dry before a second coat is applied over the first coat (figure G).
