  • Entertaining Kitchen: Wall and Trim Paint
  • A lackluster kitchen is transformed into Party Central.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-212

Brian and Michelle Meeker love to entertain friends, and although most of their home reflects their love of entertaining, the kitchen needs help. Decorative painter and host Shannon Kaye has a number of ideas to change this boring kitchen into a space with both sizzle and style.

Shannon's design plan will change the wall color to a soft, neutral beige tone, a color that will highlight bright accent colors. The cabinets will go from plain wood to a silver metallic hue, and the island base will be stained to maintain the texture and pattern of the wood to break up the strong bright colors that are part of the apartment. Pantry shelves and baskets also receive a paint makeover.

    Paint budget: $200.

    Materials (wall):

    rosin paper
    painters tape
    spackle
    spatula
    sandpaper
    brushes
    cutting brushes
    foam rollers
    paint trays
    paint mugs
    paint can visor
    Benjamin Moore white primer
Benjamin Moore paint (AC-2, Berkshire Beige)
    clear low-luster varnish

    1. The room is prepped for painting. Nail holes in the window trim are spackled, sanded smooth and touched up with white primer.

    2. Painter's tape is carefully applied around moldings, cabinetry and windows (figure A).

    3. Berkshire Beige paint is used as a color for both the walls and the trim. Shannon and crew cut in with brushes first before rolling two coats of paint on the walls (figure B).

    4. When the paint is dry, clear low-luster varnish is painted over the trim for a subtle shine. For a smooth finish, the varnish is brushed on with long, even strokes.
