With the office walls painted and dry, work begins on a functional and decorative wall circle. Comprising triangles of chalk and magnetic paint, the circle will break up the rectangular panels in the room.
Materials (wall circles):pencil string, push pin or thumbtack level, measuring tape, straightedges tape varnish 4" and 6" rollers small paint tray blow dryer chalkboard paint MagnaMagic Active Wall Primer paint (Grenadier Pond 698) Materials (desk): sandpaper warm water sponges paper towels painter's tape plastic gloves spot putty tube plastic spreaders 180-grit sandpaper tack cloths aluminum paint foam brush and rollers 1. Shannon Kaye measures and marks the center point of the wall with a push pin. One end of a knotted piece of string is placed around the push pin; the other end of the string is placed around a pencil. Holding the pencil taut at the end of the string, she draws a perfect circle on the wall (figure A). 2. She uses a level to draw four perfect quadrants (figure B).
3. Quads one and three are masked off with painter's tape; the tape edges are sealed with a thin line of varnish to prevent accidental paint bleed (figure C). 4. Using small rollers, Michelle and John roll on two coats of chalkboard paint inside the taped lines. The first coat is dried with a blow drier to speed up the process (figure D).
5. When both coats of paint are dry, quads two and four are taped, sealed and painted with MagnaMagic Active Wall Primer. Two thick coats of the primer, which is infused with iron shavings, are rolled on the two quadrants (figure E).6. When the primer is dry, a coat of Grenadier Pond paint is rolled on over it. The soft color will provide a soothing, calm contrast to the darker, institutional paint colors in the room (figure F).
7. Next, the top surface of the desk is cleaned, the edges are taped off and the dents and scratches are filled in with car putty applied with plastic spreaders and then smoothed (figure G). When dry, the surface is sanded and wiped clean of dust in preparation for painting (figure H).
8. Durable Weatherproof Aluminum Paint is used as a top coat for the desk: rolled on with a foam roller (figure I), it's then smoothed with a foam brush (figure J).
