  • Warm, Exotic Living Room: Wall Color
  • A bachelor artist's living-room walls receive a dark paint treatment to complement his artwork.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-208

Kristen and Garner are newly engaged and planning to make Garner's apartment their first home. The challenge for decorative painter and host Shannon Kaye is to turn a bachelor-pad living room into a sophisticated space with a few exotic touches.

Shannon's plan is to paint the entire room (including a large closet that will become an entertainment center) a darker, rich color that will complement a select few of artist Garner's paintings. A faux tortoiseshell paint technique dating from the turn of the century will dress up the existing desk. The Mission-style coffee table, badly in need of a new look, will be painted black and dressed up with a spatter-painted central panel (figure A) (figure B) (figure C) (figure D).

    Paint budget: $185

    Materials (wall):

    rosin paper
    painter's tape
    brushes
    cutting brushes
    foam rollers
    paint trays
    paint mugs
    primer paint
    paint-can visor
    paint (Terra Mauve, BM 105)

    Materials (closet/entertainment center):

    screwdrivers
    box brushes
    angle brushes
    foam brushes (for painting shelves)
    straight brushes (for varnishing shelves)
    4" and 6" rollers
tinted primer (Terra Mauve, BM 105)
    paint (Terra Mauve, BM 105)

    1. The baseboards are dusted for a clean paint line.

    2. The closet doors are removed (they won't be needed since the closet is being turned into an entertainment center).

    3. The floors are covered with heavy rosin paper, available at most home-improvement centers. It's less slippery than drop cloths, making it the perfect protective covering for hardwood floors (figure E).

    4. The floorboards, trim and closet are taped off with painter's tape (figure F).

    5. Primer, tinted with Terra Mauve paint, is used as a wall and closet primer. When you're going from a light to a dark color, tinted primers are a great way to add depth and richness to the final coat of paint. This color will also provide a bold background color for Garner's artwork. The edges and corners of the walls are cut in with brushes; primer is rolled on the walls (figure G).

    6. The primer is allowed to dry completely before one coat of Terra Mauve is applied to the walls and closet (figure H).
