  • Metallic Wall Treatment

    episode DADD-211

Decorative painter Gary Lord shows how you can create a foil wall treatment to give your bedroom a unique look -- and to give yourself a challenging project that will help dress up any room in the house.

Q: I want to do a metallic treatment to the walls of my bedroom. Do you have an idea for an easy treatment?

A: It’s very easy to create a metallic look on the walls of any room: all you need are metallic paints and some special foil. It’s a beautiful treatment that adds a stunning effect to a room.

I’ve done a hologram foil treatment in dozens of homes. This technique is fun because the wall looks different depending on where you stand in the room. Today I’ll show you how easy it is to re-create this look in your own home.

You need to get hologram foil, which is available online, for this technique.

    Steps:

    1. Size the walls with a slow-set sizing (I like to use Rolco): Roll the sizing onto a small area with a 4" roller. Allow it to get tacky (the tackier the better for this treatment).

    2. Apply the hologram foil: Cut the foil into geometric shapes or tear the edges in a ragged method (you could also crumple the foil, then straighten it back out and apply it to the surface. (Different methods will produce different looks.) First peel off the backing, then apply the foil to the walls, shiny side up. You may have to go back and replace the foil in areas where it doesn’t transfer. Don't expect 100 percent coverage -- you’re going for 70 percent to 95 percent coverage.

    3. Tint the paint: Add half of the metallic to the paint. We used metallic bronze and metallic red (I like the AquaColor brand).

    4. Pat the metallic paint off the surface with cheesecloth.

This hologram foil technique is beautiful -- and so much fun. Just remember these steps:

    • Size the surface.

    • Apply the foil shiny side up.

    • Add metallic colors.

And if you’re unsure of the technique, practice first on a scrap piece of wood or posterboard.
