    episode WDC-304

Family rooms need cabinets for organizing books and games and videos -- all the stuff you use in there. And cabinetry is a great place to add extra interest and style to a room. So now it's time to work a little Mediterranean magic on the cabinet area (figure A).

    Project time: 2 hours.

    Materials:
    Plywood or ready-made cabinet doors
    Caning material
    Lattice strips
    Hinges
    Screws
    Drill

    Steps:

    1. Measure the door openings.

    2. Using ready-made frames, roll out the caning material over the frame and measure where to make cuts.

    3. With a pair of scissors, cut the piece of cane, making sure to follow along the seam.

    4. Staple the cane along the lip of the frame. The excess can be removed with a utility knife.

    5. Clean up the edges using a piece of spline, gluing into place with construction adhesive.

    6. Paint the door and the cane; then insert the clip-top hinges in the appropriate slots and screw into position.

    7. Place the doors in the opening and screw the hinges to the wall.

Expert tip: If you don't have built-in cabinets, put up inexpensive metal shelving. For "doors," hang exotic fabric on a tension rod.

    You could also:

    • For added interest, mix and match colors and fabric patterns on your cabinets.

    • Instead of solid cane on the door, cut woven rattan into squares and glue them into a parquet pattern.

    • Instead of cane or fabric on the cabinet door, create an exotic light effect with smoked self-sticking mirrored tiles.

Expert tip: For easy maintenance, spray fabric-covered cabinets with stain repellent.

Time spent so far: 4 hours.
