  • Moroccan Den
    From "Weekend Decorating"
    episode WDC-304

Today Nancy Golden tackles a 22'x16' family room that used to be a family favorite -- until the homeowners grew tired of the nautical style. An exotic Moroccan den is more to their taste now, a colorful and striking family hangout with Old World mystery and flair. So that's just what she's giving them in one short weekend!

    • This makeover is rated intermediate to advanced because of the paint treatment on the ceiling and nook seats.
    • On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating the highest degree of difficulty, it rates a 4.
    • The project took 10 hours over the course of two days.
    • The estimated cost to complete the entire family room project is $2,500.

Because the secret to any design project is how you use the space, a computerized floor plan will be a big help in figuring out where everything should go.

    Paint

For the nautical family room to become a Moroccan den in one short weekend, there are a few critical pre-weekend jobs:

    • Basecoat the room: ceiling in white, walls in pumpkin-pie orange, built-ins in turquoise.
Note: To cut down on drips and touchups, paint the ceiling first, then the walls and finally the trim.

    • Paint the coffee table.

    • With an assistant to hold one end of the tape, measure the floor space, portiere areas and window (for portieres, measure the inside of the doorframe only).

    • Before removing any electrical fixture, turn off all the power to the area you're working in.

Everything is all set for day one of the weekend and the first big project: painting an exotic, decorative pattern on the ceiling. Traditional Mediterranean decor includes elaborately decorative paintings, especially on ceilings. You can stencil a design or draw one freehand; because of the popularity of stencils and the availability of decorative-art books, the choice of patterns is virtually endless. (For this project, Golden has chosen a stenciled pattern.)

Expert tip: For inspiration for a Moroccan ceiling, check the local library for art history and travel books with photos of traditional North African ceilings.

      Decorative Painting on Ceiling

      Project time: 2 hours.

      Materials:
      Stencil
      Paintbrushes
      Paint
      Two ceiling fans

      Steps

      1. Find a stencil that you like and make sure it will fit around the ceiling fixture. If it doesn't, make any necessary adjustments.

      2. With spray adhesive, position the stencil on the ceiling.

      3. Using a stencil brush, begin applying the paint in a stippling motion and continue working until you completely fill in with paint. Remember to dab some of the paint off onto a rag before applying it to the stencil.

      4. Remove the stencil. Allow the paint to dry for a few minutes, then repeat on the next section of the ceiling. Repeat these steps until the entire design has been painted.

Time spent so far: 2 hours.
