Get ready for some fun... the circus is coming to town in this episode! For parents looking for a fun, whimsical nursery decor, a circus theme provides an ideal motif.

The first step is to plan a design for the walls and ceiling, and interior designer Judy White of White Walls Design has the perfect plan: wide stripes that will create the look of a big-top circus tent.

Although this room is relatively small (figure A), it's also perfectly square, which makes it ideal for adding wide stripes to the walls and ceiling.

Before painting begins, White draws out the design for the stripes on paperboard, using a scale that corresponds to the dimensions of the room (figure B). Once the design plan is complete, the walls are measured to determine the points at which the lines for the stripes will be placed. Then chalk lines are drawn A chalk line is drawn from from corner to center using colored chalk.

When painting stripes on walls, White explains that the first step is to determine the width of the stripes then figure out how many will decide how many stripes will be then measure them out and mark by snapping a length of chalk-coated string. Simply rub with chalk, anchor it at both ends (or hold one end and have a helper hold the other) - then snap to create a straight line.

If possible, use colors that coordinate with the shades of paint you've chosen . Begin marking design first from corner to corner, then the center stripes, then the lines in between the corners and center.

Scallops created using custom-made stencil (this type of stencil can be created from either craft paper or posterboard). Trace with narrow painter's tape (quarter inch) - conforms to curved lines.

Started with ceiling (pistacchio) stripes, then painted one color of the wall stripes , then back to the ceiling and added the sky detail, then finally back to the second color of the walls.

This gives the paint about 12 hours to dry before you tape back over it. Not a problem if you're doing this type of project on weekends.
