Interior designer Jennifer Severson shows JoAnne Liebeler, host of HGTV's Room for Change, how she changed a bland basement rec room into a comfortable family room with a north-woods-lodge theme. The long basement room, originally furnished bare-bones style with a couch and a foosball table, is made over to accommodate a conversation and entertainment area and a space for playing games. The first step in warming up this basement room is covering the stark-white walls with a subtle leaf-patterned wallpaper. An eye-catching Indian rug, highly patterned in warm earthtones, warms the floor and kicks off the color scheme. A large armoire is brought in to accommodate an entertainment center, and the addition of a soft leather couch makes this a great place for watching football. A coffee table, an end table and interesting accessories, including birch-bark candles, complete the seating area, which faces the entertainment center. Further seating is provided opposite the couch by a birch-bark settee covered with richly colored kilim pillows. An antique rifle and an heirloom display case add personality to the fireplace wall. A twig ladder in the corner provides an interesting place for hanging cozy blankets. The foosball table finds a new home in the game area at the opposite end of this long basement room. Separating the two ends of the room into a conversation and entertainment area and a game area is the perfect solution to making the most of this family space.
