Interior designer Nancy Golden gives an oddly shaped attic bedroom a new, more polished look with fabric, paint and lots of ingenuity. An unused sink is turned into a vanity, and unsightly storage shelves are tucked away behind curtains. The walls are painted yucca green to create warmth and elegance. The green paint, chosen to coordinate with a favorite bedspread, softens the angles of the room and gives the small area a warm, cozy feeling. An unattractive shelving unit is hidden behind a fabric shower curtain. The same shower-curtain fabric is also used to skirt a new vanity, which covers a sink, a remnant from the room's previous life as an apartment. A piece of plywood cut to fit the top of the sink is the base of a tile top for the new vanity. A piece of mirror inset in the tile top becomes a pretty perfume tray. A tab-top damask panel opposite the bed darkens the room with an opaque covering for sleeping and looks elegant when held open with decorative cord. An antiqued gold mirror, hung above the bed to hide an unattractive cutout shelf, which served as a pass-through to an adjoining closet, takes the place of a headboard and adds dimension. Two brass lamps flank the bed, and textured pillows -- one in velvet with a crocodile pattern and another edged in bullion fringe -- complete the sleeping area. Plants on the top of the stairway wall soften this middle-of-the-room entrance.
