How can the one spare room in your home serve many functions? Designer Joy Cacicia offers some suggestions. Her clients needed a single small room to function as a home office, a relaxing family room for listening to music and enjoying cocktails, and a place to meet clients or entertain small groups. A multifunction wall unit is installed along one wall of this spare room. Sliding doors conceal a home office, a bar and an entertainment center (figure A). A home office with a computer center and filing system is easily accessible behind the middle doors. Just pull up a chair and get to work (figure B). A home entertainment center with a stereo system and storage space is housed in the left unit of the wall cabinet (figure C). Recessed halogen bulbs light up a bar with a mirrored back and glass shelves ( figure D). Grass-cloth wall covering and sisal carpet are a perfect backdrop for the owner's Asian and African accessories. The quietly contemporary furnishings allow the room to function equally well for working, relaxing or meeting with clients (figure E). The room's ethnic theme continues with an ikat-patterned Roman shade at the window (figure F). A hand-woven chenille rug atop the sisal carpet adds color and texture (figure G). Black-leather chairs provide comfortable seating for meeting with clients or relaxing with family and can be rolled to the office to provide extra seating (figure H ). Tip: - If you need to use a file cabinet but have no place to put it except in the bedroom or the living room, turn it into a decorator table:
- Purchase a 30" round wood tabletop (or have one cut at a home-improvement store), a 90" round tablecloth and a coordinating fabric for the table topper, and some iron-on hem tape.
- Turn a hem under along the edges of the topper fabric, apply the rough side of the hem tape and iron it for six seconds. Peel the tape away, fold under again and iron once more to fuse.
- Embellish the corners of the topper with iron-on floral appliques, hot-glued silk flowers or grosgrain bows with artificial fruit -- anything that matches or coordinates with the fabric.
- Top with a piece of glass for protection, and you're ready to work -- and entertain -- at your new table.
