Large-scale furniture and wall covering make this small bedroom seem larger than if it were filled with the clutter of tiny furniture and tiny print fabric.

The large-scale blue-and-white fabric sprawls all over the walls, making the room seem bigger.

Trudy used the same fabric on walls, windows and a little French chair seat, making the room cozy and giving continuity. The lattice pattern painted on the floor draws the eye across the room.

Incorporating another pattern in the same colors -- the loveseat's blue-and-white-checked fabric -- adds dimension to the room.

Interior designer Trudy Hurley has loved a large-patterned blue-and-white fabric since childhood and was determined to use it on the walls of her low-ceilinged bedroom. Using a blue-and-white color scheme and a few essential pieces, Trudy has made her small bedroom seem larger than it is. To make a small room look bigger, she suggests selecting a few oversized furniture pieces, using bold wall coverings and window treatments, painting a lattice design on floors, choosing simple bed linens and keeping ceilings white to reflect the light.

    Tips:

    • Don't be afraid to use large pieces in a room -- just limit the number of pieces.

    • Use boldly patterned wall coverings to add interest.

    • Paint a lattice pattern on wood floors, incorporating the colors of the room.

    • Choose bed linens that are simple in style and light in color.

    • Keep the ceiling white to reflect light.
