With the walls and floor completed, now it's time to address storage issues. It's easy for a garage to become a catch-all, so, keeping in mind the old adage "A place for everything, and everything in its place," Golden adds shelving and organizational accessories (figure A) to help keep the garage looking neat -- even when there's a car in there!.

    • An adjustable shelving unit is assembled to fit objects being stored or displayed. This unit has a shelf at counter height, the perfect place to set groceries before entering the house (figure B).

    • Colorful baskets hold craft materials.

    • Overhead hooks offer practical (and off-the-floor) storage for bikes and sporting gear.

    • Stackable bins offer space for tools and miscellaneous items.

    • A bench is a convenient spot for changing shoes before and after sporting events. A plastic container beneath the bench keeps sport shoes handy.

    • A mesh file cabinet holds cans and papers for recycling (figure C).

    • Small, brightly painted rolling dollies hold heavy sports equipment; just roll them over to the car to prevent back injuries.

    • A wall grid holds mops, brooms and gardening tools.

    Total time spent: 12 hours.
