    Figure A
Ordinarily a workout room wouldn't require a decorative window treatment, but because this room is open to the rest of the house, the window requires something stylish and in keeping with the home's feminine decor. So a softly pleated valance (figure A) of silk dupioni is going to be mounted on L-brackets above the window as an accent that won't detract from the breathtaking lake view outside.

    Project time: 5 hours.

    Window Treatment

    Materials
    Fabric
    L-bracket
    Screws
    Drill

    Steps

    1. Measure and mark for the placement of the bracket on one side of the window.

    2. Predrill screw holes.

    3. Position the bracket and screw it into place.

    4. Repeat the process on the other side.

    5. Position the valance and as before, predrill; then screw valance into place.

Expert Tip For an ultra-simple window treatment, hang terrycloth towels from tension rods with clip-on curtain rings.

    Shelf (figure B)

    Materials
    Shelf project
    Shelf unit
Brackets (should come with the shelf unit)

    Steps:

    1. Measure the wall and mark for the exact center.

    2. Then take a measurement from the middle of one back plate to the middle of the other. Transfer these measurements to the level.

    3. Using the level, transfer the measurements to the wall using your center mark. These will be for the center shelf.

    4. Position the bracket as you screw it in place. You may need simple drywall screws where you hit a stud, or wall anchors where you don’t. Remember: the shelves will be holding a significant amount of weight.

    5. Position the shelf over the brackets and use an Allen key to lock it in place.

Expert Tip: Drywall alone will not hold heavy shelving. Make sure you locate the studs inside the wall and secure your shelves to them.

Time spent so far: 10 hours.
