    • This makeover is rated intermediate to advanced because of the stripes on the walls and the door installation.

    • On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 indicating the highest degree of difficulty, it rates a 4.

    • The project took 10 hours over the course of two days.

    • The estimated cost to complete the entire workout-room project is $1,600.

With all that heavy exercise equipment to be moved, the first thing Golden does is to print out a computer-generated floor plan (figure A) to determine the placement of all the room's components.

Horizontal stripes make a room look longer and a ceiling look lower.

    Prep Work

    Materials
    Paint
    Paintbrushes
    Tray
    Roller

There are two jobs that must be done in advance:

    • Painting the walls with copper-hued latex paint.

    • Measuring the room.

    Stripes on Walls (figure B)

    Project time: 2 hours.

    Materials
    Painter's tape
    Chalk line
    Level
    Tape measure
Paint (we used penny, celery and watery blue tones for our accents)
    Brushes

    Steps

    1. Measure the walls and divide by 3 to get the stripe measurements

    2. Make tick marks at the top and bottom sections on the walls in all four corners.

    3. Snap chalk lines at tick marks.

    4. Tape off both sections, making sue the tape goes on the inside panel, and burnish the edges.

    5. Use an angled brush to cut in around all taped-off sections, then fill in with a paint roller.

    6. Wait until the paint is dry and remove the tape.

Expert Tip: For a less geometric look, mark verticals with a light pencil line and paint slightly wavy, freehand stripes.

Time spent so far: 2 hours.
