    Figure B

Designer Dusty Deyoe explains how to create a romantic bedroom, shabby-chic style, with items found at garage sales, salvage yards and antiques shops. She uses imperfect, well-worn furnishings in a comfortable, elegant way.

Painting is an easy, inexpensive way to brighten up a room. This bedroom was painted pale yellow with a touch of green, a soft color that blends nicely with well-worn furnishings.

The bed was turned sideways to make more space and covered with a lovely patchwork quilt. A piece of architectural metalwork hung lengthwise along the bed adds height and interest, and an inexpensive canopy made with 10 yards of fabric softly frames the bed.

A big hooked rug is an inexpensive alternative to new carpeting, and a worn spot made it even more of a deal. Camouflage is the name of the game when decorating with second-hand goods. The worn spot on the rug is easily hidden, and the damage on a lovely beaded lampshade is camouflaged with a drape of flowers. An old chair in need of upholstery is covered with a Salvation Army slipcover, and accent pillows that don't match the decor are stuffed into vintage dresses and tied at each end to make pretty pillow shams.

    Simple Bed Canopy

    Materials:

    10 yards of fabric
Four ceiling hooks big enough to hold the fabric
    Decorative wire vine
    Ladder

    1. Lay the fabric on the floor in a rectangle the same size as the perimeter of the bed, allowing enough fabric between corners to permit blousing.

    2. Place hooks in the ceiling directly above each corner of the bed.

    3. Lift the fabric, one corner at a time, and wrap it around the ceiling hooks. Wrap a piece of decorative vine around the fabric and hooks to make the canopy more secure (figure A).

    4. Blouse the fabric in a pleasing way as you loop it from hook to hook (figure B).
