    episode WDC-313

Our home office is so fresh and functional, it's hard to believe that only a day and a half ago it was nothing but a small, plain, not-so-efficient space. This warm, mature look is going to be a big hit with the homeowners -- just as soon as we add the finishing touches!

    • The window treatment in a functional, clutter-free office should be easy to take care of and easy on the eyes, so we've chosen a simple bamboo roller shade (figure A). You can line the shade with linen for privacy, if you wish, or make your own shade by stapling fabric to an inexpensive roller.

    • Good lighting is essential in any office space (figure B). You may prefer a single fixture or track lighting; for the craft table, a weighted hanging lamp that can be raised and lowered might be a good choice.

Expert tip: Even with a fixture, you’ll need a desk lamp (figure C). It should be low enough to flood the surface with light. A dark-colored glass shade will keep the glare out of your eyes.

    • A grounded surge protector is an absolute necessity for computer equipment and electronics.

    • All that great shelving calls for books, books, books!

    • Artwork and decorative items make any room more livable and more personal (figure D) - -and a home office is no exception.

    • A computer keyboard slide makes a convenient drawer for storing small craft tools.

    • Clamp a high-intensity lamp to the side of the craft table for extra light.
