To give the wallpaper map mural on the ceiling a time-worn appearance, host Nancy Golden treats it with a furniture stain. Note: Glazes can be messy so it's a good idea to wear rubber gloves and cover the floor. - Use a cotton rag to apply furniture stain to the wallpaper map in a circular pattern.
Expert Tip: Kelly Keener suggests working in a three-foot section to keep and wet edge and consistent pattern. The aged map (figure A) makes an impressive statement in the content of the room, as if men have been smoking here for generations. Golden incorporates some of the same colors from the wallpaper map on the ceiling by adding wallpaper to the backs of the bookcases already a fixture in the room. - To ensure the star medallion is at the center of the back of the bookcase, Golden measures for the center and places a tick mark (figure B).
- Measure the wallpaper outward from the star (figure C) and mark that measurement on the wall (figure D). Make several tick marks down the wall for reference.
- Align the tick marks with a level and draw a line connecting them (figure E).
- Roll the wallpaper piece with the paste side out.
- Put the rolled piece into a water tray. To keep it weighted down, stick a dinner knife or a screwdriver through the roll.
- Leave the wallpaper roll in the water for about 30 seconds. Submerging the wallpaper roll will help ensure the water activates all of the paste.
- Pull the paper out of the tray onto a flat surface and fold half of the piece into the center (figure F).
- Fold the remaining half of the piece into the center (figure G). This process is called "booking the paper." The wallpaper piece is folded like a book. This process activates the glue on the wallpaper.
- Align the piece with the lines on the wall.
- Smooth the piece with a wallpaper brush.
- Allow the wallpaper to dry before trimming excess.
- Repeat steps 1-11 as often as necessary. The final result (figure H) is a splash of color that compliments the wallpaper map mural on the ceiling.
