    Figure F

Nancy Golden shows how she transformed a nondescript study (figure A) into an intimate, sophisticated cigar room (figure B).

On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the greatest degree of difficulty, this project rates a 2. It took 11 hours over two and a half days to complete it, and the total cost for materials and accessories was $1,000.

The first step in any type of project of this sort is to measure the room carefully and construct a floor plan sketch either by freehand or with a computer program.

    Materials:
    Paint
    Paintbrushes
    Sponge
    Paint tray
    Level
    Tape measure
    Pencil
    Plastic buckets
    Wallpaper trays
    Wallpaper adhesive
    Wallpaper brush
    Chalk line
    Utility knife
    Cotton rag
    Glaze or furniture stain
    Small paint roller
    Rubber gloves
    Modular carpet tiles
    Carpet adhesive
    Double-sided tape
    Pliers
    Ladder

    Preparation:

    1. Paint walls and ceiling. Let dry overnight.
    2. Pull up carpet.

Expert Tip:Use pliers to pull up carpet and get the removal process started.

    Map Mural Ceiling

Golden continues the masculine, gentlemen's club theme by adding a world map mural to the ceiling. The wallpaper map is not large enough to cover the entire ceiling (it would be too costly to do that) so she must find the ceiling's center in order to ensure the image is evenly placed.

To find the center of the ceiling, measure the width of the ceiling minus the width of the mural and divide by 2. Repeat the measurements to find the center in length.

Safety Tip: It's a good idea to use a friend for this portion of the project.

    1. Put tick marks on the ceiling around the entire perimeter of the room.

    2. Snap a chalk line (figure C) between the tick marks.

    3. Line the first piece of wallpaper up perfectly with the chalk line (figure D).

    4. Smooth the entire piece of wallpaper with a brush (figure E) and roll the edges flat with a small paint roller.

    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as often as necessary until the entire mural is complete. The wallpaper map Golden chose for this project is divided into 3 sections.

    6. The final result (figure F) is an accent to the entire room and the beginnings of the masculine atmosphere desired.
