Use Con-Tact® paper to change the look of metal and plastic furniture, cardboard or foam boxes or even a kitchen wall. Self-adhesive vinyl is available in many styles, offering lots of options for quick and colorful makeovers. Use adhesive-backed vinyl in unusual ways -- for example, making a checkerboard pattern of contrasting squares of marble-look paper on a metal bookshelf (figure A). Give a plastic shelving unit the appearance of granite or a kitchen backsplash the look of French tile (figure B). To apply vinyl to a metal shelf, peel off the backing a little at a time (figure C). Turn the sticky side of the vinyl down, and align it with the end of the shelf, making sure to allow enough extra at the end to cover the edge of the shelf. Smooth it in place with a ruler or a wallpaper smoother (figure D).
