Chris Madden, host of HGTV's Interiors by Design, tours the elegant foyer of interior designer Mary Jo Donohue's beautiful Georgian home and gives suggestions for creating interesting stairways and foyers.

    Suggestions for Foyer Design

Create an interesting design on the walls with paint.

The subtle striping of the walls gives the appearance of wallpaper but is actually paint applied in a double-glazing technique. A painted surface that can be wiped clean is a practical approach in a family home, and the double-glazing adds depth and interest.

Add a runner to stairways and hallways.

The elegant stairway is an integral part of this foyer's design scheme. A needlepoint border on the stair runner adds a lovely touch. A border of this sort is suitable only for a wide stairway; on a narrow stairway, a border gives a bowling-alley look.

Hang photographs and artwork in stair-step fashion up the staircase.

Install low-voltage lights to add interest.

Create small display areas for collections on tabletops, taking care to balance the corners of the foyer.
