Q: I want to use some vintage pieces of furniture in my home, but I don't want to create a complete vintage room. Can you show me how to mix and match my vintage stuff with my newer pieces?

A: (Ask DIY decorating expert Bea Pila) You don't have to create a vintage room to use your pieces. Mixing and matching furniture, accessories and other pieces from different eras creates a beautiful and unusual look.

If you wish, you can comb sources such as flea markets, garage sales and tag sales to find vintage pieces, but you can also find nice knockoffs -- and even modern items -- that will mix together nicely.

There are only three rules you need to remember:

    • Practice repetition of form (in other words, keep the lines similar: straight lines with straight-line items, curvy lines with curvy-line items, etc.).

    • Use complimentary colors (get out a color wheel if it helps).

    • Have fun! If it feels right, go with it! It's your home, after all, so you should enjoy being there.
