As mentioned earlier, a multitask room requires a wide range of furnishings. It needs to function as a guestroom without really looking like a bedroom; and it will have a desk for paying bills, but it should not look like an office. It is also a retreat, so it requires elements that are entertaining, relaxing and calming. Here's how it all came together:

A small desk is put against one wall (figure A). Desk designs vary and can be found to suit any taste. The same cannot be said for office chairs. Golden solves the problem by modifying a side chair with casters.

    1. A typical desk chair has 18" of seat height. Casters will add 2" of height to any chair.

Tip: To ensure the chair will slide under the desk after modifications, measure before altering the legs.

    2. Measure chair legs up 2" from the bottom.

    3. Measure all four sides of each leg and mark measurements with a speed square.

    4. Remove fabric from this space if legs are covered.

    5. Saw off legs.

    6. After all four legs are cut and checked to make sure they're level, drill a hole in the center of each leg and insert the casters (figure B). This process may vary depending on the type of caster you purchase.

    7. Add a slipcover, and you have a dressy, feminine office chair.

    • A daybed with a dark wood frame is placed against one wall (figure C). The dark frame gives strength to this side of the room.

    • A whitewashed table is cut in half to make end tables for the daybed (figure D). It is the right scale, and the whitewashed finish contrasts with the dark wood of the bed.

    • 18" table lamps are added to the tables to create height in the space.

    • A slipcovered wingback chair and ottoman are positioned at an angle to the daybed (figure E).

    • An armoire is added across from the daybed for viewing TV or movies (figure F).

    Decorative details

    • Elegant pillows are added to the daybed (figure G). Colors and fabrics include the bold blue-and-cream check that inspired the room colors, along with a variety of satin pillows detailed with an abundance of passementerie.

Tips: Re-cover old pillows with new fabric to save money, and if you want your bed to resemble a chaise, place all the pillows at one end.

    • Add a different look with desk accessories. Golden chose tailored accessories to anchor the work space and give it a serious touch.

    • Large black-and-white prints of fun, fashionable women hang over the daybed (figure H).

Tip: Hang pictures at eye level for the best visual impact.

    • A small circular rug is added to continue the circle theme on the walls.

    • And finally, the most innovative touch of all: inexpensive necklaces with mother-of pearl accents are used as tiebacks for the draperies (figure I).

Now, the only thing left to do is to sit back and enjoy the view!
