Natural fibers, gold-hued floral fabric, bamboo and rattan furnishings and old-style ceiling fans give a tropical feel to the living room of this elegant beach house in East Hampton.

The comfortable, casual living room of the beach house Kyle Wells designed for clients in East Hampton has the feeling of an elegant home in the tropics. A muted color palette in tones of gold, sepia and green combines with ceiling fans, rattan and bamboo furniture and wooden blinds to give the room a warm, exotic feeling.

Taupe-colored linen curtains hang at the windows, in combination with wooden Venetian blinds, which feel a bit like plantation shutters. A large palm plant set against the wooden blinds gives the room a true tropical feeling (figure A).

A sisal rug adds subtle color and texture, perfect for a beach home, and a double-bound finished edge adds elegance (figure B).

The floral element of couches upholstered in a two-toned gold pattern of faded roses brings the outdoors in without the usual multicolored florals (figure C).

A dark rattan chair with tropical-print cushions contrasts nicely with the more subdued coloring of the rest of the room. Two antique bamboo tea tables with folding tiers serve as unusual end tables (figure D), and old-style ceiling fans with mahogany blades add a cooling touch (figure E).
