An aged-wood picket-fence headboard and the comforting colors of celadon and seafoam green illustrate the appeal of timeworn objects and faded fabrics in the master bedroom of this beach home.

You don't need to live near the water to enjoy its relaxed mood and soothing palette. California designer Gina Robinson describes more beach decor options, this time for beach-home bedrooms.

In a master bedroom a section of 1920s picket fence stands in as an inexpensive headboard. Its weathered surface works nicely with whitewashed wood accessories and the muted colors of green-and-white bed linens. A great find -- an old wicker library table from the '20s with its original celadon-green finish -- is topped with a seashell-filled glass lamp and a vase of pink blooms.

In the second bedroom a pink-shutter headboard sets the tone for the girlish pink-and-white room (figure A). Bed linens in pink-and-white stripes and florals cover the bed, and an empire dresser, circa 1850, gets a striping of pink and white on its drawers to set off hot-pink paint applied in the '20s (figure B). Inexpensive bamboo shades hang at the window; their neutral color and tropical feel make them a perfect window treatment for a beach-home bedroom.

In the guest room a comfortable antique wicker couch is prettied up with green print cushions and pink-and-white striped pillows. An old life preserver hangs on the wall, and a round table sports original ocean-liner and hotel labels laminated to the top (figure C).

    Tips:

    • Designer Gina Robinson considers wicker and rattan furniture of the '30s and '40s a great deal. Scout flea markets and estate sales for these great old pieces, but arrive early to get the best deals.

    • Shop discount linen-store and department-store white sales for low-cost sets of lovely old-looking bed linens, which work well with aged beach furnishings.
