Interior designer Antonia Hutt's style of decorating, called nouveau raj, reflects her British-Indian heritage. The Indian influence is clearly seen in the furniture and accessories in her living room, dining room and bedroom. Antonia mixes and matches an eclectic variety of components with her own artistic flair. Heavy Indian pieces combine with delicate fabrics and bright colors; high-end treasures coexist beautifully with thrift-store finds and personal artwork. Mix and Match In Antonia Hutt's eclectic nouveau-raj living room, a French deco daybed from the '30s and a beautiful teak chair from Indonesia blend with thrift-store tables, exotic fabrics and artwork from her schooldays. Antonia's bedroom is a lovely mix of delicate fabrics, heavy Indian furniture and bold color. Mosquito netting hangs over the bed, and a large Indian table serves as a desk. A bright-red carpet remnant tops the sisal floor covering used throughout her home. Try Out New Looks As a designer, Antonia is continually testing new ideas. Her methods for trying out new looks provide design tips we all can use. To try out a new pillow cover, she pins fabric to the pillow and tests the look for a few days to see whether she likes it before making the piece. A design for a wall sconce is first tested for shape and proportion by pinning a pattern of the shape on the wall. Personalize Your Space Make your space fit your own needs and lifestyle. Antonia's dining room, seldom used for dining, is turned into an area for reading and study. When it needs to serve as a dining room, she moves a big table from the wall to the center of the room.
