Red, black and gold transform an eclectic traditional living room into a bold oriental statement. Red, a Chinese symbol for the sun and the luckiest of all colors, combines with traditional black lacquer and touches of gold. Asian styling, upholstery fabrics in luxurious silks and bold stripes and touches of Far Eastern art come together to produce a contemporary room with an oriental twist. A bright-red Chinese rug with a rich black border is the centerpiece of the room. A pagoda-style couch, backed by a hand-painted screen, faces two luxurious cream-silk chairs to form a conversational grouping. An occasional table in black lacquer and a glass-topped brass coffee table complete the setting. An intimate dining area is created in a windowed corner to the right of the fireplace. Chairs upholstered in a bold black-and-white stripe provide seating around a glass-topped table with a pewter-and-brass base. To the left of the fireplace an oriental lamp sits atop a console table of black onyx. A leaf-patterned bench provides extra seating. The mantel is finished simply with Chinese medallion candlesticks on either side of a framed kimono print hung sideways for interest.
