  • Modern Bedroom: Finishing Touches
  • The existing furniture receives some final updates, and the room is ready.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-203

This bedroom renovation is almost complete: the walls are painted, shelves are in place, the curtain separating the bedroom from the bath is in place and the bookcases have been given a decorative stain. Now it's time for a few finishing touches.

    1. To help hide the tangle of cords behind the desk, Shannon Kaye creates a false back for the desk. First she cuts foam-core board to size and attaches it to the back of the desk with double-stick tape (figure A). Strategically placed cutouts in the board let electronic equipment cords slide out of sight behind the desk. Before the renovation, the desk was the most prominent element in the room (figure B); now it's transformed into a sleek, functional design element (figure C).

    2. Finally, the furnishings are put back in the room and the curtain is hung to separate the sleeping area from the bath.

This stylish new room looks bigger and brighter and has a much more pulled-together, clean and modern look (figure D). Imagine: an entirely new look to the space for just $150, the cost of the paint!
