  • Modern Bedroom: Furnishings
  • A curtain room divider and a bookcase makeover add to the bedroom redesign.
    From "Fresh Coat"
    episode DFCT-203

David and Tasha's bedroom renovation is on its way to completion: the walls, included painted wall panels, are finished and an artistic headboard is in place, complete with nightstand shelves. Now it's time to tackle the furnishings.

    1. A white fabric curtain will divide the bedroom from the bathroom. To liven up the fabric, Shannon Kaye uses fabric paint and one of the wall-art rectangles to create a pattern on the curtain. She rolls orange-red paint over the rectangle (figure A) and presses it randomly on the curtain. The look is abstract and whimsical, designed to look like rectangles falling in space (figure B).

    2. Next, it's on to the bookshelves (figure C). They are moved outdoors (for good ventilation) and sealed with a conditioner made for use on bare wood; the conditioner, applied in the direction of the wood grain, will create a smooth surface for the stain (figure D).

    3. When the sealer is dry, sandpaper is used to lightly sand the wood surfaces: as with the conditioner, sanding ensures that the stain goes on smoothly and evenly.

    4. The stain is umber mixed with black and applied with foam brushes. Each stroke is applied from one end of the wood surface to the other: long, even strokes across the wood prevent obvious brush marks from appearing on the surfaces (figure E).

    5. To enhance the top of the shelves, Shannon applies a second layer of glaze and pulls a rubber comb across the wet glaze (figure F). When combing through glaze, it's okay to overlap previously combed areas; just remember to keep wiping glaze build-up off the comb as you work. The comb teeth are rubber and won't scratch surfaces; this makes them the perfect tool for decorative painting on both vertical and horizontal surfaces, including walls. Checkerboard patterns can be made by cross-combing.
